During the late 1800’s, it was common for men to list their first and middle initials when stating their name in society.  All of his paintings are signed M C Haywood, with a slight left turn at the top of the d.  He never signed a painting with just Haywood.  Also, although he painted genre scenes of African Americans in his work, he is listed as white on his death certificate. 

He worked and lived in Las Vegas, New Mexico; Topeka, Kansas; Kansas City, Missouri; Buffalo, New York; Jamestown, New York, and Norfolk, Virginia.
